The Don CeSar (often styled Don CeSar or “The Pink Palace”) is an iconic historic hotel on St. Pete Beach, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. It opened in 1928 as a luxurious Mediterranean Revival/Moorish-style resort and has remained a landmark through glamour, wartime use, near-demolition, and restoration. Origins and ConstructionReal estate developer Thomas Rowe purchased about 80 acres in the St. Petersburg/Pass-a-Grille area in 1924 for $100,000 during Florida’s land boom. He envisioned a “pink castle.” Construction began around 1925–1926 under architect Henry H. Dupont (with contractor Carlton Beard). The original plan was a smaller six-story hotel with roughly 110 rooms, but it expanded to about 220 rooms/baths. Costs rose sharply (from an initial ~$450,000 estimate to $1.25–1.5 million). Innovative floating concrete foundations addressed the sandy site.The hotel was named after Don César de Bazan, the heroic character in William Vincent Wallace’s opera Maritana. Official and popular accounts link the project to Rowe’s tribute to a lost love, an opera singer named Lucinda (sometimes given as Lucinda de Guzman or similar), whom he is said to have met in London; family opposition prevented their relationship, and she later died. He reportedly built a fountain replica in the hotel inspired by their meeting place. Note that elements of this romantic story are legendary and have some timeline inconsistencies in secondary accounts.Opening and Jazz Age HeydayThe hotel (initially styled Don Ce-Sar) formally opened on January 16, 1928 (with some early guests arriving slightly earlier), amid Gatsby-era extravagance. It quickly became a winter playground for the wealthy and famous, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Al Capone, and others. Rooms were expensive for the era, and it featured Mediterranean and Moorish details such as arches, red-tile roofs, balconies, and towers.It weathered the Great Depression in part through a deal with New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert that housed the team for spring training for several years, helping keep the property viable.World War II and DeclineThomas Rowe died suddenly of a heart attack in 1940; his estranged wife (variously referred to as Mary or Virginia in sources) inherited it. In 1942 the U.S. Army purchased the property (around $450,000) and converted it into a sub-base hospital and then a convalescent center for airmen (sometimes nicknamed related to combat stress recovery). After the war it became a Veterans Administration regional headquarters. The interiors were stripped and utilitarian; the building gradually deteriorated and was vacated by the government around 1967–1969.Near-Demolition and RestorationBy the late 1960s/early 1970s the abandoned structure faced demolition. A citizens’ “Save the Don” effort, led by June Hurley-Young, campaigned for preservation. In 1972 it was sold (via the city of St. Pete Beach) to hotelier William Bowman Jr. (and associates) for about $460,000. A major ~$3.5 million restoration followed; the hotel reopened as a full-service resort in November 1973 (spelling standardized without the hyphen).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974/1975 and became a founding member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America in 1989 (noted as the only historic resort of its kind on Florida’s Gulf Coast at the time).Later History and Modern EraThe property has undergone multiple renovations and expansions (spa, additional pool, restaurants such as Maritana, event spaces, guest rooms, etc.). It has appeared in films and media (including Once Upon a Time in America, Tom Petty performances/filming, Thunder in Paradise, and others) and continued to host celebrities and events. Local lore includes ghost stories involving Rowe.Recent years brought further updates blending historic character with modern luxury. After hurricane-related damage (Helene and Milton), it underwent repairs and resiliency work, reopening in March 2025, with additional ballroom projects following. It remains a prominent beachfront resort with rooms/suites, dining, spa, and event facilities.Today it operates as a historic luxury beach resort on Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach, preserving its distinctive pink exterior while offering contemporary amenities. The ceremony attire is seaside cocktail with an emphasis on beach comfort and shades of pink.Think breezy, relaxed elegance—flowy maxi or midi dresses, lightweight fabrics, vibrant prints, and chic jumpsuits for women. For men, linen button-down shirts paired with light-colored pants or shorts are perfect choices.To help guide your outfit selection, Jeff will be wearing white shorts with a pink linen button-down shirt, and Lynette will be wearing a floor-length bohemian-style dress.The ceremony will take place on a covered terrace, allowing guests to enjoy the ocean view and outdoor setting while staying cool and comfortable.

Dress Code

Allegiant flight #1066 departs Roanoke at 10:51 a.m. August 27th direct to St. Petersburg with return flight #984 at 8:05 a.m. August 30th. Shuttle from the airport to The Don Cesar will be provided upon arrival.

TRAVEL

A dedicated elevator to the ballroom level where the ceremony and reception are held will be available the day of the wedding. Access code will be provided to guests at check-in and will be updated here once received.
